Westborough Dentist: What Is Invisalign?

Westborough Dentist

Even though you may be hesitant about getting traditional braces, you can still get orthodontic treatment. Your Westborough dentist can straighten your teeth using the innovative Invisalign system that provides an effective alternative to conventional metal braces.

The Invisalign system consists of a series of custom-made plastic aligners. The plastic is completely clear, offering an extremely low profile that is virtually invisible to all but you.

During your treatment, you will be wearing a series of aligners for about two weeks at a time. Each set of aligners will be gently shifting your teeth into their correct positions.

Once two weeks have passed, you should be ready to receive your next set of aligners to continue your treatment.

3D Modeling

Your Westborough dentist will examine your teeth and create the 3D model. Invisalign technicians will determine the needed steps to shift your teeth into their correct positions based upon your desired results.

Invisalign will then create your aligners for your treatment. The process of manufacturing takes about one month, after which your aligners are sent to your dental practice for placement.

Attachments

It is common for patients to need what are known as “attachments.” These are small bits of plastic, known as composite, that we attach to certain teeth. They are colored to match your teeth, making them difficult to see.

Moreover, the purpose of the attachments is to offer a grip or handle for your aligners to pop into place.

This way, your aligners will be fit and remain on your teeth properly. Furthermore, your Westborough dentist will advise.

Rubber Bands

Some patients may need to wear rubber bands along with their aligners. The way that they are used is similar to how they are employed with traditional braces.

The bands help to rotate a single tooth. Likewise, they help to correct the wearer’s bite.

Keeping Aligners in Your Mouth

Although you can remove your aligners at any time to eat, or brush and floss your teeth, you need to wear them for at least 22 hours a day.

If you do not wear your aligners for the minimum daily requirement, your treatment will be slower and your teeth can be shifted incorrectly.

Post Invisalign Treatment

After all orthodontic treatments, patients will need to wear orthodontic retainers. This prevents teeth from shifting back. Your Westborough dentist will advise.

You have two treatment options for retainers:

  • Most patients prefer clear plastic retainers that resemble their Invisalign trays.
  • Other patients choose fixed retainers that are attached to the inside of the front teeth. Moreover, the retainer is made up of a wire stretched across the inner part of your lower set of teeth.
